Tamice Spencer-Helms: A Mixtape of Becoming

They were raised within the Black church, where matriarchs offered a mirror of belonging—but it was a flawed reflection, distorted by theological structures that could not hold their Blackness, queerness, and nonbinary becoming. The church, like the world, asked them to shrink—to fit within the binary-induced shame that defines empire and hierarchy. They were, at once, too much and never enough.
For years, Tamice navigated a fragmented existence, moving between faith and doubt, between hyper-visibility and erasure, between longing for belonging and surviving exile. They pastored Black students at the Atlanta University Center, guiding them toward a deeper understanding of God, all while wrestling with their own unraveling faith.
Then came Pride in the Pews.
Tamice Spencer-Helms’ story is a journey of undoing and remaking, of following Jesus beyond whiteness and conventional Christianity, and of crafting a wineskin expansive enough to hold the sacred without constraint. It is a story of discovering that sin is the safety of invisibility and salvation is the courage to be fully seen.

A gathering of queer exiles from the Black church, this space became a crucible of reckoning. There, a panel of Black trans women discussed Alice Walker’s The Color Purple—the sacred text that had always spoken to Tamice’s soul. In that moment, Shug Avery’s words shattered their silence:
“It pisses God off to walk past the color purple and not notice it.”
Everything clicked. Sin was not moral failing but the denial of self, the shrinking into invisibility. And salvation? Salvation was embracing the fullness of their nonbinary, queer, and Black identity—not despite God, but as the very reflection of God.
They stood and named themselves—publicly, vulnerably, without apology. It was a full-circle moment, a return to tradition but on their own terms. The Color Purple was not just a text; it was a theological revelation—a sacred alternative to the binaries that had bound them. It was the invitation to live in the tension, to hold tradition and transformation, to honor what was and embrace what is becoming.
This moment catalyzed R.E.S.T. (Radical Ethical Spiritual Tradition)—not as a theology of anticipation or divine rescue, but as an embodied practice of self-actualization, authenticity, and ethical non-duality. It dismantled the external pursuit of God, the relinquishment of personal agency, and the binary imagination that fractures identity and spirit.
Tamice’s work—curating mixtapes, guiding Black students, pastoring fugitive spaces—is a manifestation of this theological journey. They are the mixtape. Their life, their curation, their methodology is an act of conjuring, a melding of past and present, tradition and becoming, faith and rupture.
They now guide others—individuals, teams, and organizations—through their own moments of stuckness, transition, and inquiry. Whether through Mixtape Focus Groups, the R.E.S.T. Mixtape, or soulful leadership initiatives, Tamice offers a new wineskin, a way of holding onto what is sacred without being bound by what no longer serves.
Their story is the story of the hush harbor, the cipher, the fugitive’s path to freedom—a story of refusing erasure, choosing visibility, and fiercely loving the God they found within themselves.
And like The Color Purple, it is an invitation...
